Nexus Summit 2016

Learning Together at the Nexus Summit inaugural conference was held Aug 21-23rd in Minneapolis MN. Hosted by the National Center for Interprofessional Practice and Education (, a public-private partnership that provides leadership, evidence and the resources needed to guide the use of interprofessional education to enhance the experience of health care, improve population health, and reduce the overall cost of care. The Summit was co-hosted by the American Interprofessional Health Collaborative ( and designed to advance the way stakeholders in IPE/CP work and learn together to advance the Triple Aim.

David Pole, PhD, MPH, Leslie Hinyard, PhD, MSW, and Eileen Toomey, MS (I.O. Psychology, Graduate Research Assistant) presented at the Nexus Summit. The SLU-CIER is currently conducting three separate research projects as part of the Nexus Innovations Network that align the SLU-CIER research agenda with national initiatives, as well as providing data for the National Center Data Warehouse to assist in answering larger questions about interprofessional education and practice linked to the Triple Aim.

Dr. Pole, Dr. Hinyard, and Ms. Toomey presented on the IPE 4900 Interprofessional Community Practicum course. The 90-minute workshop "Enhancing community partnerships to improve students' becoming collaboration-ready for population health" introduced the framework of IPE 4900 and how SLU has embedded competences for collaborative practice into the learning experience. Additionally, participants had the opportunity to review and discuss course projects, the process of engaging community partners, how SLU has collaborated with agencies to identify their goals and outcomes and how we link community agency needs to practicum learning objectives. The workshop also presented outcomes data on students and community partners and enabled participants to discuss how to translate IPE courses and learning activates into outcomes research projects addressing key questions for IPE and IPCP.  Currently SLU is the only project in the Nexus Incubator Network of national research projects addressing preparing students as collaboration-ready practitioners to address population health.
